Golf Digest Magazine Showcases St. George Utah Golf in October Issue

Golf Digest Magazine Showcases St. George Utah Golf in October Issue

Oct 4, 2018

Highly respected Golf Digest writer Ron Whitten showcases St. George areas best and some hidden gems. Here are a few excerpts from the story!

“Bandon Dunes and Central Wisconsin aren’t the only enormous sand boxes of golf in America. In the southwest corner of Utah, in the shadow of Zion National Park, lies a sandbelt of rich, red, pulverized silica atop which half a dozen four-star golf courses have blossomed in the past quarter-century.

This is where a seam of the earth’s core once erupted in tremendous fury, before morphing into a glorious skyline of twisted, tilted towers of red rock and canyons of sandstone, their walls streaked with broad strokes of rust, umber and salmon, certain strata bleached white by saturated rain. The softest layers crumbled and eroded over time into a high desert of dunes and hollows so porous as to forgo the need for drainpipe beneath fairways and greens. The tandem communities of St. George, Washington City and Hurricane (pronounced Hur-a-kin) have served as a plentiful palette for a number of course architects, most of them from Southern California or Phoenix and well-versed in dealing with desert motifs.”

SOUTHERN UTAH IS A GOLF MECCA THAT HAS YET TO BE FULLY EXPLORED.

“Southern Utah is a golf mecca that has yet to be fully explored. The high altitude provides for thinner air, drier conditions and lots of carry and fairway roll. The area is playable much of the winter, and the prices are a fraction of Phoenix or Vegas. What’s more, that glorious backdrop of slanted rock that stretches across the horizon of every course is called the Pine Valley Mountains. Now that’s golf.”

There are many high profile bucket list courses in the world, the obvious big time ones like Augusta, Cypress, National Golf Links, Shinnecock or Marion and those are truly prized courses atop many golfer’s bucket lists. But for most of us, many of these courses are a pipe dream, and some nearly unattainable in our lifetimes. But….fortunately there are many epic courses that are accessible for us mortals!

Recently CNN.com and @CNNSport Instagram compiled a list of 19 Golf Courses You Must Play Before You Die, and a St. George, Utah Golf Course landed in the list!

Nestled at the foothills of the staggeringly beautiful Snow Canyon State Park, replete with towering red and white sandstone cliffs providing the backdrop for this fantastic golf experience. Two 9 Hole Courses in St. George You Gotta Play!

Sand Hollow Links Course

While this layout is highly overshadowed by the “wow” factor of the Sand Hollow Championship Course next door, the lovely Links Course is not to be missed! We won’t go as far as comparing this “desert links style” to storied seaside and prairie links courses you all know and love but, we will tout this one as a heck of a ton of rumpled, sandy, blown out awesomeness!

Fun is the main factor here, and you can enjoy a totally different style golf , with the ability to use ground game shots, running plays and use your imagination instead of a range finder. The green complexes are some of the most interesting putting surfaces in the area, and can be a joy an maddening all in the same putt. If you truly want to play this one like it was meant to be played, Rent a Set of Hickory Golf Clubs at the pros shop, you can channel your inner Old Tom Morris for a couple of hours. Dont mis this one!

Red Hills Golf Course

This course is 110% muni, with a shack for a clubhouse, old carts, virtually no service, no restaurant, not an ounce of pretentiousness, and oh it’s so perfectly wonderful, you gotta play it!

This is the kind of track you fell in love with golf as a kid. I recall freshly cut grass, images of morning sun rays and late summer walking rounds with you childhood friends, recall the silly shots you would try, the goofy bets for post round lemonades, and for sure remember bragging rights you had with a big drive off your persimmon woods. This is Red Hills Golf Course.

This is where we grew up and fell in love with the game. Red Hills is a wonderful stroll, with beautifully secluded golf holes filled with fun shots. Usually can walk this one in late afternoons in 90 minutes or less.

Most St. George Courses Don’t Overseed!

Sep 3, 2015

Yep, thats right! The best golf courses in St. George don’t need to close in September for overseeding like the courses in Mesquite and most of them in Las Vegas. Mainly the newer courses have taken advantage of newer strains of turf, which withstand the heat and cold much better than Bermuda. Thankfully for lucky golfers there is no need for overseeding with rye grass in the winter.

Coral Canyon – Open – No Overseed
Sand Hollow – Open – No Overseed
Sky Mountain – Open – No Overseed
The Ledges – Open – No Overseed

#5 @ Green Spring Golf Course

Originally slated as a Jack Nicklaus design in 1990, a change in plans landed unknown golf architect Gene Bates his first solo design project. With a great piece of land, a blank canvas, and excitement in his eyes, Mr. Bates knocked it out of the park with an awesome 18 holes, which has become an area favorite of our staff. The par 3 fifth (pictured here) is still one of the coolest and most memorable one-shotters in all of St. George! Green Spring Golf Course is one of the area’s best values!

#15 @ Sand Hollow Golf Club

Well, what can we say? “WOW” this is definitely one of the most visually stunning par 3’s in the entire world. Just jaw-droppingly cool and so much fun to hit a great shot here!

With multiple tee box angles, this one can be played from left or right of the canyon which dramatically changes the look and scariness of the shot. But, from whatever angle you choose, this hole is one-of-a kind, and we think it’s one of the most visually stunning par 3’s in the entire world. If you are coming to St. George to play golf, Sand Hollow Golf Club is a 100% “Must Play”

#6 @ Coral Canyon Golf Club

A mere 90 yards from the regular tees can be a pretty easy shot for some, but thats why its such a great hole. Golf is supposed to be fun right, so…this hole provides just that, a fun-filled exciting shot, a big green, and its artfully tucked into a beautiful red-rock outcropping! This one sets up a possible birdie!

Coral Canyon Golf Club is currently the #4 ranked public golf course in Utah by GolfWeek Magazine, and it’s one of the most popular plays in the area. Put it on your schedule!

When Mat Dye saw the property he was given in St. George to build this golf course, he must have been giddy with joy to have the opportunity to craft his vision at The Ledges Golf Club. Located just off the property line of the unbelievably beautiful Snow Canyon State Park, no golf architect could imagine nor create such an awesome backdrop to build a fantastic set of golf holes. With many of the holes taking on the iconic landforms and similar playability feel of his uncle Pete’s’ legendary golf courses, Matt Dye created fun, memorable golf holes in one of the most beautiful settings in the west at The Ledges.

With the opening nine holes allowing players to ease into a good swing, the greens are the major challenge with fast speeds and considerable slopes. Players need to get tuned in to a good swing groove to be ready for the back nine, holes get a little tighter and tougher, but more apparently the views become even more distracting.

Recently ownership has made a firm commitment to playing conditions and keeping The Ledges Golf Club at the forefront of the St. George golf scene.
